A naming ceremony is a celebration of the arrival of a new baby. It is a way of welcoming the child and officially introducing him or her to family and friends. It is also a time for parents to make certain promises and commitments to their child, and for other important people in the child’s life to give well wishes, and pledge their support.
There are also other reasons for a naming ceremony such as the uniting of step or adopted children within a family, or an adult name change. Naming ceremonies are not baptisms or christenings, and whilst they carry no legal status, they are a meaningful way to mark a significant life event.
